Stumbled upon these beautiful portraits by American artist Judith Peck. On her site she has many traditional portraits but it is the more fractured ones that emote the most. They have wonderful broken textures mixed in with the faces, creating a sense of damaged vulnerability that I just love. 
"Beauty and pain, life and death come into balance, and the viewer becomes the philosopher, drawn into introspection on the meaning and preciousness of life."

Saw this sketch while visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Wonderfully loose gesture and swashy, free, feel to it. Wish there was a better pic of it out there... One of the best pieces in the whole museum.
