RIP Elizabeth Taylor, A Homage of Art

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 0 comments
Richard Avedon

In homage to Elizabeth Taylor, who died today, is a gallery of artworks based on her. Elizabeth was 79 years old,  she died in Los Angeles of heart failure. The artists who took the time to do these wonderful works showed they really loved her, or at least loved her image. Who wouldn't? She certainly made a mark and will be forever remembered.

Mug Shots of Famous Writers

Friday, February 25, 2011 0 comments
Mug shots of four authors who wound up getting arrested.

Ezra Pound - Pound made anti-American radio broadcasts during World War II. He was arrested as a traitor in 1945. One of the 20th century's most influential -- and controversial - poets in the English language. His life's work is titled "The Cantos".

Emma Goldman - arrested February 11, 1916 for promoting birth control. How dare she? Her autobiography is titled "Living My Life".

Malcolm X (Malcolm Little) -  civil rights leader, author of "The Autobiography of Malcom X", arrested for burglary.

Dalton Trumbo - author of many famous screenplays, including "Roman Holiday", he was also blacklisted by Joseph McCarthy.  In 1947, Trumbo was sentenced to a jail term for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Good for him!

Phone Book Faces, The Carvings of Alex Queral

Monday, November 15, 2010 0 comments

Taking an ordinary phone book, Alex Queral carves a face into this object of so many faceless names. With the book, a very sharp X-ACTO® knife, a little pot of acrylic medium to set detail areas and a great deal of talent, Queral literally peels away the pages like the skin of an onion to reveal the portrait within. Once the carving is complete, he will often apply a black wash to enhance the features and then seal the entire book with acrylic to preserve the work. However, he never loses the line registration; and the book remains quite pliable.

“It can be quite tense work sometimes because it takes a long time to finish and when you cut something away you can’t get it back again. Nearing the end of the carving and then suddenly having it ruined by a careless cut can be pretty crushing. You have to start all over again.”

Morrison's Multiple Mug Shots

Jim Morrison’s mug shot from 1963
1963
This may have been the first time Morrison, who was a student at Florida State University at the time, was arrested by the Florida Police (this time it was for drunkeness and petty larceny of a police helmet and an umbrella), but it wasn’t his last.

1967
Four years later on March 5, 1967 Morrison was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, indecent exposure, profanity, and drunkenness during a Doors performance in Miami.

1968
This mug shot of Jim Morrison, taken after the rock icon's January 1968 arrest at the Pussycat a' Go Go in Las Vegas, is at Hogs & Heifers Saloon along with his arrest report. Arrested near midnight, Morrison, The Doors' trouble-prone lead singer, was listed as 5-foot-11, 145 pounds, with brown hair, hazel eyes and "bad" complexion. Dressed in a green coat, purple shirt, black hat and brown shoes, Morrison gave his address as Penthouse C, 8721 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.

1970
Sept. 23, 1970. Morrison and Darryl Arthur "Babe" Hill arrested for public drunkenness in Clearwater, Florida.

The Great Face of Tony Curtis Has Died

Thursday, September 30, 2010 0 comments

Tony Curtis, the Bronx tailor's son who became a 1950s movie heartthrob and then a respected actor with such films as "Sweet Smell of Success," "The Defiant Ones" and "Some Like It Hot," has died. He was 85. The actor died at 9:25 p.m. MDT Wednesday at his Las Vegas area home of a cardiac arrest. His first wife was actress Janet Leigh of "Psycho" fame; actress Jamie Lee Curtis is their daughter.

"My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages," Jamie Lee Curtis said in a statement Thursday. "He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world." -Via MSNBC
Here are some shots of the heart throb in his youth...

Some words from Tony-
"That's life. We're all brought up in a world that isn't the best place for us to be in once in a while. There are so many problems and we try to overcome them all. So these movies use these capsules of pain and anger, joy and love, to bring us, the audience, moments of joy and pleasure. And that's what they are. For me to do a movie like The Defiant Ones, I felt very strongly about that. I feel strongly that we, all of us, are brothers and sisters, and nothing interferes with that except our education, our background, where we grew up and how we should do it. If you eliminated all those negatives and gave us an open view of what life would be like, it would be different. Jack [Lemmon] and I dressed up like girls in Some Like It Hot. Nobody wanted to do that; they never made a movie like that before. Two leading men dressed up like women? Do you mind? There was enough of that going on in the streets without having it on the screen. You wouldn't believe the mail I got after that movie. "At last, Tony, at last!" They'd send me limousines, diamond necklaces and bracelets. I didn't realise how many doors it would open. [audience laughs] And everywhere I went I said, "No, I don't wear dresses at home."
- From the Guardian,UK interview
